What is CBD?
CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. Cannabis is a universal term that includes two different varieties of plants called marijuana and hemp. THC is the major component of marijuana which gives people the psychoactive or “high” feeling. The hemp plant is lacking in THC and to be classified as hemp, a cannabis plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by volume; you won’t experience any high effects.
How CBD helps the body
The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which engages in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system and play an important part in regulating inflammation. Your ECS regulates how quickly neurotransmitters are being released, slowing them down or speeding them up as necessary to return to and maintain balance. According to a study, researchers found that CBD significantly reduced chronic inflammation and pain administered to mice and rats. In a different study using an animal model, CBD applied topically on the skin helped lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Researchers suggest CBD might counteract the hypersensitivity of cells surrounding nerves in people with chronic pain, including those with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia syndrome affects the muscles and soft tissue. Symptoms include chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and painful tender (trigger) points.
CBD holds promise for conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, psychosis, and Parkinson’s disease. New research published in 2021, “Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease”, CBD helped to restore the function of two proteins key to reducing the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaque, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, and improved cognition in early-onset familial Alzheimer’s.

CBD is commonly used for anxiety and insomnia. Many studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. CBD has also been shown to reduce levels of stress and anxiety in those suffering from conditions such as PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. CBD even reduced the stress and discomfort surrounding public speaking. Although numerous more medical studies are needed to determine the effects of CBD for a variety of health concerns, research has found no adverse health outcomes or abuse potential from CBD use, but rather several beneficial medical applications.
