Have you heard of liposomes before?  If you haven’t, you soon will! It’s an exciting technology that we’ll be talking more about in the coming weeks. So what are liposomes?  Keep reading to find out…

Definition: What are liposomes?

Liposomes are essentially a nutrient wrapped in a layer of fat (phosphatidylcholine, which is a fat molecule). This is how nutrition is delivered to babies through breast milk. Small “fat bubbles’ filled with nutrients, basically. Liposomes are sometimes used to deliver drugs to specific targets in the body. They are also used to deliver nutrients into the body. Liposomes are better at delivering that nutrient into the cell than powders which make up most tablets and capsules. Others refer to it as a nano delivery system. They’re amazing!

What are the benefits of liposomes in products such as drugs and supplements?

Liposomes have several different benefits, all of which come from their unique mechanism. They encapsulate the active content and protect it from effects of anything that might cause damage.  Here are the main benefits of liposomes:

* Their phospholipid bilayer makes it possible to transport various kinds of drugs, making them applicable and useful for the delivery of a large number different of drugs and supplements.

* Liposomes encapsulate the molecules and protect them from harmful effects of the acids and enzymes.  Curcumin is a great example of a substance which benefits from this feature of liposomes.

* Having different types of liposomes and different sizes means that they can travel to their targeted cells through different routes. This means that they can provide localized effects in tissues.

* Another way liposomes increase efficacy is through their connection with cell membranes.

Liposomes and how they improve supplements

Liposomal supplements are a class of health supplements with an added liposomal shell around their major molecules, which, as stated above allows for increased absorption in the body and helps higher doses be absorbed into one’s system faster.

So why are we writing about this fascinating nano delivery system?  We’ve got a big announcement coming soon, so we won’t spill the beans quite yet, but we’re always looking at possible new products as well as improving our current offerings. Stay tuned for company updates to learn more!
